The Netherlands, like most developed European countries, can boast highly advanced telecommunications market. All its spheres are quite developed and characterized by fierce competition, notably the mobile sector. The incumbent is previously state-owned company KPN, which is now leading the main sectors in the telecommunications market. KPN is famous for deploying its services not only in the country itself, but also abroad. Fixed-line sector, where it dominated since its establishment, boasts absolute penetration and high connectivity in the Netherlands. The mobile market in the country is also ripe, with most contemporary technologies in hand, including 3G, mobile broadband and mobile video. Standard 2G plans are somewhat out-of-date for the majority of Dutch citizens, and 3G network penetration now comprises 90%. Still, people are not enthusiastic about data services, though it's the most encouraged perspective among mobile operators now. As the voice plans have already seized the minds of subscribers, they tend to expand HSPA-based services. Still, the average revenue per user is gradually falling, as well as the average number of minutes used by subscribers.

Recently there have been four major mobile operators in the market, but as T-Mobile merged with Orange, there are now only three of them. The leader is KPN Mobile, which accounts for slightly more than a half of total market share (51,3%) and shows a steady tendency to further progress. KPN is followed by T-Mobile, which has nearly 30% of subscriber base in its disposition. The last place is occupied by Vodafone, which is gradually losing its position to KPN Mobile and T-Mobile, and having nearly 20% of market share. Internet infrastructure is highly developed in the Netherlands, with its citizens enjoying the newest technologies. Broadband technologies are available in every area of the country, as well as cable Internet. The leading ISP is KPN, which has deployed its activity on behalf of several subsidiaries (Direct ADSL, Planet Telfort, HetNet and so on). It accounts for almost the half of all ADSL connections in the country. The leader is followed by France Telecom subsidiary, Orange SA, and Tele2. Cable sector is dominated by @Home, UPC and Casema. The newly introduced technology with high potential is FttH. In the Netherlands its development is encouraged not only by major telecoms, but also by municipal authorities and even individuals.
